Getting started

Where are my books kept?

In the library folder you choose the first time Ko Books opens. Ko Books copies each book there, in folders by author; its catalogue and backups sit in a hidden .kobooks folder inside. The files you added from elsewhere stay where they were, unchanged.

How do I add books?

Press + beside Library, or drop files and folders on the window. Ko Books adds them in the background; you can keep working, pause or cancel. A report lists anything it skipped and why.

I use Calibre

Choose Import from Calibre. Ko Books finds the library (or asks for the folder that holds metadata.db), reads a copy of its database, and copies the books in. Calibre's library is never changed; importing again later adds only new books.

E-readers and Kindle

Sending to an e-reader

Connect it by USB. It appears under Devices in the sidebar. Select books and press Send, or drop them on the device. Each copy is checked after it is written. Eject when Ko Books says it is safe to.

Send to Kindle by email

Set your Kindle's email address and your own email account in Send to Kindle, and add that account to the approved list in your Amazon settings. Ko Books sends from your account; its password stays in the macOS Keychain or Windows Credential Manager.

A book can't go

If the device can't read the book's format and Ko Books can't convert it, the book stays out of that send and says why. Protected (DRM) books go only as they are, to a device that can open them.

Trial and licences

The trial

Everything works for 14 days from the first time Ko Books opens on a computer, with no account and no card. After it, without a licence, reading, searching, editing, organising, exporting and backups keep working; adding, converting and sending wait for a licence.

Buying from Ko Books

Open Settings → Licence and choose a plan. Your browser opens kobooks.app/buy and Paddle's checkout. Once you've paid, Ko Books activates by itself on that computer, and your key arrives by email.

Activating with a key

Keep the email with your key. On another computer, paste the key into Settings → Licence and press Activate. Activation needs the internet once; after that Ko Books works offline.

Three computers

A licence works on 3 computers at a time. Activating a fourth never fails: the computer used longest ago gives up its place. On that one, Ko Books keeps reading and exporting, and Use on this computer takes the place back. Deactivate on this computer frees a place yourself.

Cancelling Plus

Choose Manage subscription in Settings → Licence, or use the link in your Paddle receipt. Plus works until the end of the period you paid for. If a renewal fails, Plus keeps working 7 days while Paddle tries again.

Refunds

Within 14 days of buying Ko Books or of a first Plus payment, you get all of it back: reply to the Paddle receipt or write to support@koona.app. The refund policy has the rest.
